Problems/Comments

Slaven’s Cabin is in the Coal Creek National Historic Mining District located along the Yukon River near the mouth of Coal Creek. The cabin, a barge landing, and a number of outbuildings were built in the 1930s and operated as a way-station for mining operations upstream at the Coal Creek mine. Petroleum contamination is present at the former above ground storage tank location and at the new outhouse site. See file number 775.38.003 for the Coal Creek Mine, located 6 miles upstream on Coal Creek.

3/8/2011 Site Added to Database A new site has been added to the database Mitzi Read
3/16/2011 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 79049 name: Petroleum - Unknown Origin Melody Debenham
5/24/2011 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved the Slaven’s Cabin Site Investigation Work Plan describing investigation activities at two areas. In the summer of 2010, while digging archaeological pits for siting a new outhouse near Slaven’s Cabin, archeologist noted petroleum odor. Three soil samples were collected from shallow test pits and analyzed for GRO, DRO, and BTEX. DRO was detected at 6,300 mg/kg. A review of historic documents indicates an incinerator drum in this general vicinity. In 1998, sampling was conducted at a former fueling area 250 feet west of the cabin as part of a larger site investigation at the Coal Creek Mine (located 6 miles upstream). DRO was detected at 165,000 mg/kg. To assess the horizontal extent of contamination at these locations, soil samples will be collected from the top 5 feet of soil using a shovel or a hand auger. Samples will be analyzed for GRO, DRO, RRO, BTEX, PAHs, VOCs, and metals. Melody Debenham
12/9/2011 Site Characterization Report Approved Approved the final Site Investigation report summarizing August 2011 site investigation activities at Slaven’s Cabin site in the Coal Creek National Historic Mining District of the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. The National Park Service contractor collected soil samples at the former above ground storage tank (AST) site and at the new outhouse location. Diesel range organics (DRO) were identified at the former ATS site at 59,100 mg/kg. During the site investigation, two partially buried drums were observed at this site. At the outhouse site DRO was detected at 4,640 mg/kg. In addition, arsenic, chromium, and selenium were detected above their respective cleanup levels. Additional work is recommended at the AST site to assess the extent of petroleum impacts and to survey the site for drums. At the outhouse site additional sampling is proposed to determine if the metals are within naturally occurring background concentrations. Melody Debenham
12/9/2011 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 79222 name: Former AST Melody Debenham
6/12/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved letter report presenting evidence that the arsenic detected in soil samples from the Slaven’s Cabin site is naturally occurring and there is no anthropogenic source of arsenic at the site. Melody Debenham
8/3/2012 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved the final site investigation work plan. To delineate the extent of petroleum impacts at the former AST site, 4 soil samples and 1 groundwater sample will be collected. The soil samples will be analyzed for diesel range organics, and the groundwater sample will be analyzed for gasoline and diesel range organics, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The two drums observed at the site will be located and any liquid contents assessed. A search for additional drums will be performed. Melody Debenham
11/16/2012 Site Characterization Report Approved Approved the final 2012 Site Investigation Report describing site activities to delineate the extent of petroleum impacts at the former AST site. Soil sample results had a maximum of 1,900 mg/kg diesel range organics. Groundwater sample results were below the cleanup levels. In addition, the contents of the drums were evaluated and found to be rusty water. During assessment activities, a cache of at least 7 additional drums was found behind the original drums. Melody Debenham
4/29/2013 Cleanup Level(s) Approved Established 18 AAC 75.341, Method Two, Table B2, Under 40-inch zone, ingestion cleanup level of 10,250 mg/kg for diesel range organics (DRO) at this site. Melody Debenham
4/29/2013 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved the final Work Plan for Slaven's Roadhouse AST Crib Investigation 2013 (April 2013) describing site characterization activities to delineate the vertical and horizontal extent of diesel contaminated soil remaining at the AST site above the Table B2 ingestion cleanup level of 10,250 mg/kg. Melody Debenham
10/28/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved the final report describing site characterization activities to define the lateral and vertical extent of diesel contamination remaining at the former above ground storage tank site. Results show two areas where diesel concentrations exceed the established cleanup level, with a maximum depth of 2 feet. The proposed remediation strategy is to apply an oxidizing agent for in-situ treatment. Melody Debenham
6/25/2014 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final site restoration work plan. Petroleum contaminated soil at the former aboveground storage area will be treated with Terramend to promote biological degradation. Melody Debenham
9/30/2014 Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter Potentially responsible party letter sent to the National Park Service. Melody Debenham
10/1/2014 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final report documenting addition of Terramend to two impacted areas at the former Aboveground Storage Tank site. Melody Debenham
7/17/2015 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final work plan to collect soil samples from soil treated in 2014 with Terramend. Melody Debenham
11/13/2015 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final Slaven's Roadhouse Former Aboveground Storage Tank Soil Sampling 2015 Report documenting soil sampling from area treated with Terramend in 2014. All sample results are below the ingestion cleanup level for diesel range organics. Melody Debenham
