DEC received a letter report for soil sampling during partial berm removal of the Middle Tank Farm from DNA Environmental's D. Frank. All soil samples screened with PID and heated head-space testing with a PID returned results that indicate no contaminants are present. DEC required confirmation that there have been no historical spills in the area of the berm to require further soil analyses. |

DEC received a letter report summarizing the characterization and oversight activities conducted by DNA Environmental Consultants, LLC (DNA) as part of a partial removal of the secondary containment berm at Crowley's Nenana Middle Tank Farm in Nenana, Alaska. DNA screened each loader bucket using visual and olfactory senses and a photoionization detector (PID)to make in-situ observations. DNA also evaluated the remaining berm in 15 locations with heated headspace analysis using a PID. No PID readings were above 0.0 ppm, and no locations had staining or odors. Recommended removing the remaining containment berm without additional testing. DEC approved removing remainder of berm with segregation of soils if there are suspect soils identified during the removal. |

Soil borings and groundwater monitoring reveal petroleum contamination in soils, typically, from 5 - 10 ft below ground surface in areas predominantly centered around the Rail Area, Middle Tank Farm and Lower Tank Farm. The RPs Qualified Environmental Professional, Weston Solutions, is recommending additional sample events to determine the horizontal and vertical extents of contaminants of concern. |

ADEC reviewed the "2018 Annual Groundwater Monitoring Report; Nenana Header and Rail Line Areas; Nenana, Alaska". Free product continued to be found in MW-7R, and also MW-13. Monitoring wells 1-6, 10R, 11, 12, and 14 through 16 were sampled. During the 2018 sample event, groundwater was found between 6.77 to 10.06 feet below top of well casing. Groundwater flow direction was documented to be from south to north. Gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), benzene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and naphthalene were reported in at least one monitoring well with a concentration that exceeded the ADEC Table C criterion for groundwater. Also, TAH (sum of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes [BTEX]) and TAqH (sum of BTEX and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons) were found in some of the shoreline wells with concentrations that exceeded the Alaska Water Quality Standard criterion. |

DEC has reviewed two documents submitted in December 27, and 22, 2022 for the "October 2022 Groundwater Monitoring Event; Nenana Header and Rail Line Areas, Nenana, Alaska and Passive Skimmer Free-Product Recovery Checks, 2021-2022; Middle Tank Farm Rail Line Area, Nenana, Alaska", respectively. DEC approves both reports. Continued monitoring of 10 wells documented continued exceedances of petroleum contamination including gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), benzene, naphthalene, 1,2-dichloroethane (DCA), and 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene in groundwater monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-14, MW-15. It has been suggested that the data supports the potential for two separate source areas, one at the former Header Area and a second to the west of the Rail Line Area, although the extent of contamination has not be fully delineated to the east and south. Light Non-Aqueous Petroleum Liquid (LNAPL) continues to be present and collected from both recovery wells MW-13 and MW-7R. Exceedances of the Alaska Water Quality Standards continue in wells MW-1, MW-3, MW-4, MW-14, and MW-15 for petroleum criteria (Total Aqueous Hydrocarbons and Total Aromatic Hydrocarbons). |
