Problems/Comments

This site is part of an area that has been known in Fort Yukon as "Old Village Lands." It is about 2 acres in size, and was the location of an unregulated dump used historically (between approximately 1930-1970) by the residents of Fort Yukon, the old Hudson Stuck Memorial Hospital, the BIA Territorial School, and local merchants. There is no known contamination but it is suspected to have contaminated the water ways through the entrance into Joe Ward Slough. Residents suspect that old transformers and junk vehicles, among other refuse, were disposed in this dump. The site is currently abandoned and not in use. The City of Fort Yukon applied in 2005 for a DEC Brownfield Assessment (DBA) of this site. At that time it was entered into the database under the name "BFT - Old Landfill - Joe Ward Slough." It did not rank in the top six applicant sites that year and thus was not awarded an assessment. In 2006 the Gwichyaa Zhee Gwich'in Tribal Government (Native Village of Fort Yukon) applied again for a DBA for this site; this time the site was awarded a DBA. Concerns are that the site may be contaminated and that the contamination may be leaching into groundwater and the adjacent surface water bodies. The community would like to use the site for a new rifle range or possibly a new fuel-storage tank farm.
