Groundwater Protection and Water Wells Discussion

Participating state agencies and other stakeholders have begun an open discussion regarding issues and concerns with water wells and perceived impacts to groundwater sources. This is in response to feedback received from stakeholders during three public meetings hosted by the DEC Drinking Water Program in October 2012. The purpose of the meetings was to raise awareness of issues and concerns and determine whether an interest existed to find solutions.

Current Status

(Last modified: September 2017)

The DEC has been holding stakeholder workgroup meetings since March 2013, roughly monthly (except during the summer months). The primary purpose of the workgroup meetings is to address the items identified in the "Issues and Concerns" document compiled as a result of the initial public meetings in October 2012 (see download link below). The next meeting will be held TBA with web-conference and teleconference capabilities. If you would like to participate as a stakeholder, please contact Rebecca Baril via the contact information provided at the bottom of the page. To keep informed of the status, check this web site regularly.

Past Meetings

October 2012: Public stakeholder meetings were held in Soldotna, Wasilla, and Fairbanks on October 1st, 15th, and 16th, respectively. These meeting were organized by the DEC Drinking Water Program, with the help of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development (DOL&WD). The purpose of these meetings were to present the perceived issues and whether stakeholders felt the issues warranted further action, as well as to hear any concerns or issues that stakeholders had. Many stakeholders impacted by water wells were encouraged to attend.

Starting March 2013: Stakeholder Workgroup meetings have been held roughly monthly (except during summer months). Below are the Agendas and Minutes from these meetings.
