The Office of the State Veterinarian (OSV) oversees producers and processors of milk, milk products, cheese, and frozen desserts; inspects the sanitation conditions and equipment at the state's dairy farms and milk processing plants, and issues permits to dairy farms, processing plants, and haulers.

In addition, the OSV oversees the producers and processors of commercial scale slaughter and processing of reindeer intended to be sold as part of commerce and intended for human consumption; ensuring wholesomeness and non adulteration of inspected reindeer product that potentially could be sold and/or commingled into USDA inspected sausage type products.

Raw Milk Questions and Answers:

Can I sell raw milk?

The answer: Only to a milk processing plant or for animal food. See 18 AAC 32.060. Commercial sales to the general public are prohibited.

Can raw milk be used to make cheese?

The answer: Raw Milk can be used to make some cheeses and is not required to be pasteurized. Please call Barb Hanson at (907) 375-8278
