Former St. Michael Airstrip

Site Location

DEC Contaminated Sites contact: Jessica Hall, Project Manager, 907-269-7553 (Anchorage)

Site Narrative

  • Requested by the Native Village of St. Michael

Contamination has been identified near the former airstrip with seeps occurring along one side of the airstrip, near the footpath to the school (within 100' to 150' from the school), and along the A/C store foundation. In 2007, a Phase I assessment was conducted pursuant to the DEC Brownfields Program. Work has been done and is ongoing in the area through the Native American Lands Environmental Mitigation Program (NALEMP) because of Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) status of former Fort St. Michael.

The airstrip is where the community plans to build a new school, electric cooperative structure and bulk fuel tanks.
