Map of area.

Olson’s Gas Service #2 is located on Lots 19, 20, and 21, Block 1, Central City Subdivision. Past business operations included automobile fuel service, a camper wastewater dump station, self-service car wash, and a car rental. Two investigations conducted in 1987 and 1992 suggested that a substantial petroleum release occurred near the sites underground storage tank (UST) array and fuel dispensers. In 1995, three USTs arrays located onsite were removed.

During the UST array removal effort in 1995, roughly 800 tons of contaminated soil was removed and treated. Despite this excavation effort, contaminated soil was still left in place. In 1995 an air sparge/soil vapors extraction system (AS/SVE) was installed and began operation. This facility continues to receive grant funds through the State of Alaska Financial Assistance Program to fund cleanup activities.

Public Health and Environmental Concerns

The contaminants of concern (COCs) are primarily petroleum; gasoline and gasoline components (BTEX). Petroleum contaminated soil remains on property. Extensive impacts to the soil and groundwater have been identified both on and off property.

Current Status

This site continues to be treated by the AS/SVE system installed in 1995. The groundwater is being monitored for petroleum constituents.
