The former Airport Union station, now doing business as Mike's Airport Express, is a leaking underground storage tank (LUST) site located in the Juneau airport commercial area. Contamination was discovered in 1997 and 1998 during the removal and upgrade of underground storage tanks and piping. A release investigation was conducted and groundwater monitoring wells were installed. In 2001 approximately 150 cubic yards of petroleum-contaminated soil were excavated and taken to United Soil Recycling, a local contaminated soil treatment facility.

Public Health and Environmental Concerns

There are numerous inactive drinking water wells in the area and several that may still be active. The active wells are not in the direction of groundwater flow. The groundwater plume, primarily contaminated with benzene, has moved beneath Glacier Highway and toward Duck Creek, an intermittantly flowing fish stream. The plume diminishes before reaching Duck Creek based on groundwater monitoring results since 2000.

Current Status

Soil vapor extraction and air sparging systems have been installed to reduce groundwater contaminant levels to below regulatory cleanup levels.
