The Marine Vessels Section of the Industry Preparedness Program has staff in Anchorage and Valdez. We provide Oil Discharge Prevention and Contingency Plan (Cplan) reviews, conduct exercises, and inspect all of the marine vessels statewide that are involved in transport of oil as cargo. In addition, this section provides oversight of all of the nontank vessels over 400 gross tons, which came under DEC oil prevention and contingency plan regulations in May 2003, and the Alaska Railroad Corporation fuel trains.
The Marine Vessels Section has three groups.
- First is the non crude oil group, based in Anchorage, which deals with (primarily) the barge operators statewide.
- Second is the crude oil group, based in Valdez, which deals with the crude oil tanker traffic, mostly in Prince William Sound but also in Cook Inlet.
- And third, we have a group in Anchorage that provides regulatory oversight of the newly regulated 400 gross ton or greater nontank vessel population as well as the Alaska Railroad fuel trains.
