The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Coast Guard are working on a multi-stage risk assessment of maritime transportation in the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Archipelago. This effort is being driven by the December 8, 2004 grounding and subsequent oil spill from the M/V Selendang Ayu, along with other marine casualties in the region.
The first phase of this long-term risk assessment and mitigation strategy will be to initiate a project titled: Risk of Oil Spills in the Aleutian Islands- A Study to Design a Comprehensive Risk Assessment. A Committee established within the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies is conducting this project. The committee will hold it’s first meeting on October 29-30 at the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Conference room in Anchorage, Alaska.
