Incident Description

Incident Location Map

Location The F/V Icy Mist grounded at 54°13’ N, 165°58’ W on the northwest corner of Akutan Island. Akutan Island is located in the eastern Aleutians, approximately 35 miles east of Unalaska and 766 air miles southwest of Anchorage.
Product/Quantity Response personnel removed 200 gallons of lube oil and 9 bags of oiled absorbent pads from the F/V Icy Mist. Due to severe weather and seas, the diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid tanks were compromised releasing 2,700 gallons of diesel and 200 gallons of hydraulic fluid to near-shore waters. There is no oil or other hazardous substances remaining on the vessel.
As the seas continually worked the vessel against the rocks, the hull incurred structural damage and the fish holds became open to the seas, releasing the 135,000 pounds of Pacific Cod onboard the vessel to the surrounding waters.
Cause The F/V Icy Mist grounded due to operator error in rough seas.
Time/Date of Incident The Fishing Vessel Icy Mist grounded on February 25, 2009 at approximately 04:10 AM. The ADEC received notification from the U.S. Coast Guard National Response Center on February 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM.
