Twenty nine miles north of the Red Dog Mine port site on the haul road. Red Dog Mine is located approximately 90 miles north of Kotzebue.
The spill was reported to have occurred at 4:00 AM on September 21, 2005. Nana-Lynden Logistics notified ADEC at 8:00 AM on September 21, 2005.
Initially Nana-Lynden Logistics reported that 15-20 tons of zinc concentrates and an unknown amount of diesel fuel was released to the tundra. On September 21, 2005 at 6:00 PM, Nana-Lynden corrected the spill report to be 15-25 tons of zinc concentrate and no diesel was released from the truck’s saddle tanks.
A southbound truck hauling zinc concentrate went off the northbound side of the road. The driver was uninjured. The cause of the accident has been determined to be driver error.
