ENI Petroleum (ENI) employees discovered a spill of crude oil at the Nikaitchuq Production Facility at 09:50 PM on February 09, 2010. The spill was reported to the Alaska State Troopers at 11:33 PM. Alaska State Troopers reported the spill to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation at 11:36 PM.
ENI estimated approximately 55 gallons of crude oil spilled outside of secondary containment and six gallons within containment, resulting in a total of 61 gallons of spilled crude oil.
ENI began oil production from the Nikaitchuq facility on January 30, 2011 and is currently operating in a functional process startup condition. The spill occurred after programmable logic circuits (PLC) failed to respond to set points on high level switches, allowing crude oil to pass through process vessels into the flare.
