Navigating the Online Small Water Systems Exams

If you plan on taking an online exam, please read these directions very carefully.  It’s very important that you be familiar with navigating the exam.  Additionally, you are required to take the Sample Test, which is available at the end of this page.

Step 1: The Log On Page

You'll be sent an ID and password once DEC approves your application.  At the testing center, you’ll be required to enter your ID and password to access the exam.

Step 2: The Proctor Log On Page

The online exam is a proctored exam.  After you enter your ID and password, the testing site proctor will enter his/her ID and password.

Step 3: Starting the Exam

Each exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions.  When you’re ready to begin, you’ll need to click the “Begin” button.

Step 4: How to Navigate Through the Exam

It's very important that you understand how to navigate through the exam.  This window will be displayed anytime you click the “Help” button.  Please take a moment to review the basic navigation commands in the following illustration:

Step 5: Exiting

Click the “End” button to exit the exam once you're comfortable with all your answers.  Leaving the exam any other way may result in your answers being lost.

Step 6: Exit Page

The system will make sure that you answered all the questions.  If not, you’ll be given an opportunity to resume the exam.  If you want to know your test scores, you can click on the “Finish and Display Results” button.  If you’re afraid to look, simply click the “Finish and Exit” button.

Step 7: To Find Out Your Score

If you clicked “Finish and Display Results”, click the “Scores” link to view your score. Once you have viewed your results click the “Exit” link to go to the log off page.

Step 8: Log Off Page

No matter how you left the exam, you will need to log off via the log off page by clicking the “Exit” link. Your results will be emailed to you and DEC. DEC will automatically process your results within two weeks.
