Online Small Water System Certification Exams

What's available?

Two certification exams are available over the Internet: Small Untreated and Small Treated Water System. Passing the Small Untreated or Small Treated Water System exam certifies you to operate systems classified as either small untreated or small treated. You must meet eligibility requirements in order to take an online exam. Each exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions.

Am I eligible?

The eligibility requirements for each exam are listed below.

Small Untreated Water System

• High school diploma or GED; and
• Three months of experience operating a small untreated (or higher) water system OR completion of an approved course.*

Small Treated Water System

• High school diploma or GED; and
• Six months of experience operating a small treated (or higher) water system OR completion of an approved course.*

Where can I take the online exam?

Exams are administered at seven University of Alaska testing centers. Exams are available during each testing center's normal business hours. Additional testing centers may become available as demand increases. The approved testing centers are located in:
