Gravel Pits
Gravel pits occur throughout Alaska and their improper operation can result in surface water quality impacts and impairment.
One of the most effective ways to control pollution is the use of Best Management Practices (BMPs). BMPs are physical, chemical, structural, and/or managerial techniques used to minimize water pollution.
This guidance manual is designed to assist with the identification of BMPs appropriate for use on a specific site or project in Alaska to provide environmental protection to surface waterbodies.
The guidance manual provides standardized and comprehensive BMPs for implementation at operating gravel pits throughout Alaska to reduce impacts to surface water quality. This guidance manual addresses BMPs for gravel pit operations where stormwater runoff may impact water quality of surface water bodies, including lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands.
