Problems/Comments

Glutaraldehyde spilled near the Battery #1 heaters, northwest of a glutaraldehyde storage tank. Also, crude oil was detected in late August 1991. As much soil as possible was excavated (about 125 cu. yds.) but due to piping close to the area, digging had to stop. A risk assessment was conducted for the remaining contamination which is currently under review. Last staff assigned were Twidwell, Krogseng, and Sundet.

Action Information

1/31/1990 Update or Other Action On 1/31/90, DEC received a spill report from Marathon that about one barrel of biocide Treatolite XC107 was spilled and picked up. Donald Seagren
7/17/1991 Update or Other Action On 7/19/91, the plan "Work Plan Gulteraldehyde Contamination Monitoring Trading Bay Production Facility" dated July 1991 by James Montgomery was received by KDO. The plan specified that monitoring wells be proposed to be installed and soil as well as groundwater samples be collected. Bryson Twidwell
11/6/1991 Update or Other Action Marathon submitted their report "Trading Bay Production Facility Gultaraldehyde Monitoring", dated 11/6/91 that was prepared by James Montgomery. Glutaraldehyde was not detected in the four monitoring wells but BTEX was detected. The report documented that crude oil was detected in late August 1991 but no glutaraldehyde. Bryson Twidwell
11/7/1991 Update or Other Action A 11/7/1991 report "Risk Assessment for Petrolite XC-107 Spill Maroathon Oil Trading Bay Production Facility" was submitted to DEC. Donald Seagren
11/8/1991 Update or Other Action In a 11/8/91 letter, Marathon submitted a final report "Risk Assessment for the Gluteraldehyde Spill Site at the Trading Bay Production Facility", by Dames and Morre and included groundwater sampling results by James Montgomery. The risk assessment had been requested by DEC. The letter also noted that the report shows that gluteraldehyde was present in low levels in the south west corner of the spill site but does not constitute an environmental or human health risk sufficient to warrant further remediation of gluteraldehyde. Marathon also requested DEC permission to fix the excavated gluteraldehyde contaminated soil with cement and dispose of the fixed material at the Kustatan Waste Disposal Site during the summer of 1992. Bryson Twidwell
