Problems/Comments

Lab analysis of soil samples following removal of 3 residential heating oil USTs in 1990 found that a fuel distribution valve (Tank 2) leaked over a 10-year period and impacted surrounding soils. Lateral extent and depth of contaminant plume are unknown, groundwater estimated at 12 to 14 feet below ground surface was not encountered in the excavation. Estimates of release quantity for the 10 year period range from 300 gallons (moderate, 0.5%) to 15,000 gallons (25%). Final disposition of the tanks and excavated impacted soil is unclear. USTs replaced with two 500 gallon double walled ASTs. Located in the Chugach National Forest.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
6/26/2001 Site Added to Database DRO contamination ranging from 84 mg/kg at the limits of excavation to 7,230 mg/kg adjacent to Tank 2's valve. From the sample results the main leak was from Tank 2. All three excavations showed samples above ADEC's cleanup levels at the limits of excavation. (Updated in 2007 to reflect administrative file) Shannon Oelkers
6/26/2001 Site Ranked Using the AHRM Preliminary ranking. Located in the Chugach National Forest adjacent to salt and fresh water bodies. Bruce Wanstall

8/13/2007 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved site assessment work plan. Coordinated work plan review comments with ADF&G & PWSAC Donald Seagren
1/8/2008 Site Characterization Report Approved Reviewed September 2007 Soil & Groundwater Monitoring Report, Cannery Creek Hatchery, Chugach National Forest dated December 07. Based on the data in the report, only 1 soil and 1 GW sample had detections for DRO. All other petroleum constituents were non detect in all samples. The detections were around residential unit 2, but were well below Method Two cleanup standards. Based on a review of the 1990 UST removal report and data collected during this assessment the volume of the release is estimated to be on the low end of the previously estimated range of 300 to 15,ooo gallons of heating fuel. ADF&G and PWSAC have been supplied copies of the assessment report. No further assessment or remedial work is required at this site. Donald Seagren
1/9/2008 Site Closure Approved No soil or GW contamination found exceeding cleanup levels. No furhte actions required. Donald Seagren
6/12/2008 Update or Other Action Site transferred from Don Seagren to Paul Horwath per Linda Nuechterlein. Alyce Hughey
