Problems/Comments
Releases associated with fueling and offloading fuel from airplanes on the runway apron occurred since the site was in operation in the 1950's. There were no official spill reports, however contaminated soil was encountered in 2006 during reconstruction activities. Soil was sampled for DRO, GRO, and BTEX; DRO was the only contaminant that remains in the soil above the most stringent cleanup levels.

12/1/1994 | Update or Other Action | There are several losses at this airport - all of which have spun off from this loss. This spill considered closed. Other individual problems/spills such as fire retardant ramp, FAA, Building 206, etc. will be dealt with as individual sites. | Ray Dronenburg |
9/27/2007 | Update or Other Action | Reviewed McGrath Runway Soil Sampling Report. The report presents final analytical data for soil samples collected near the fuel station on the McGrath Airport runway. Ten soil samples were collected and analyzed for DRO, GRO, and BTEX compounds. The levels of DRO measured in soil samples ranged from 300 to 436 mg/kg. No other fuel compounds exceeded DEC cleanup levels. | Todd Blessing |

7/28/2010 | Update or Other Action | DEC discussed the status of this site with Robert Holbrook of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. Mr. Holbrook mentioned that the reconstruction of an apron on the north side of the runway was completed without any excavation or removal of contamianted soils. A drainage ditch was built between the runway and road and no contaminated soil was observed. Crowely Marine's pipes that were connected to the airport were capped and left in place. | Todd Blessing |

5/20/2014 | Update or Other Action | ADEC spoke with the Airport Manager for the McGrath Airport to discuss the site history. The Airport Mangager informed ADEC that the site was used as a refueling and fuel offloading point for planes since the 1950's. The fuel dispenser was connected to a pipeline that was removed prior to the construction in 2006. Anecdotal reports said that releases occurred at the fueling point as a surface spill and were likely small in size. Contaminated material encountered during the 2006 apron reconstruction event was excavated down to native soil and disposed of offsite. Confirmation samples were collected and reported in the 2007 Final Analytical Data Report. | Meghan Dooley |
