Problems/Comments

Soil contamination was found beneath a diesel driven pump that is used to pump fuel from airport to tanks. Recently separated fuel line that spans slough of Stony River which discharged fuel into slough. Soil contamination present near school building fuel line joint. Update 2009: It is supsected that the areas of contamination, listed above, resulted from poor fueling practices and leaking pipe joints in the 1980's and 1990's. In 2003 AEA/Denali Commission constructed a new bulk fuel system (tank farm and piping)from the air-strip to the school.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
8/22/1990 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = MS - Monitoring/Sampling). Environmental Services found only 1 sample out of 16 collected that was below 100ppm total petroleum hydrocarbons near the fuel storage tank located on UNICOM's and School property. Former Staff
9/24/1990 Notice of Violation Must submit to ADEC cleanup plan for review/approval prior to starting cleanup actions. Need to contract with a qualified environmental consultant to have a site assessment of school garbage dump, fuel transfer, storage equipment and fuel storage areas. All oily soils beneath pipeline/pumphouse to be cleaned to 100 ppm TPH. Former Staff
9/30/1990 Site Added to Database Fuel oil and lube oil contaminants. Former Staff
10/29/1990 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = SI - Site Investigation). ADEC received assessment report on United Utilities site. It indicated that subsurface contaminated soils had been cleaned up to < 100 ppm. Awaiting for solid waste permit for long-term stockpiling. Former Staff
8/9/1991 Site Number Identifier Changed Old# 90220125001, new# 90250125001 Western district now. Former Staff
3/9/1994 Update or Other Action Letter from ADEC noting that the Iditarod School District did not respond to the Department's May 22, 1992 letter , and again requesting a corrective action plan and the status of old tanks, pumphouse, and fuel pipeline. Ray Dronenburg
8/29/1994 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Lime Village Assessment prepared by Environmental Health Sciences-Alaska, Inc. August 29, 1994, was reviewed 3-6-09. Five areas were investigated: the former aboveground storage tank (AST) at the school near the generator shack, the existing AST near the teacher’s house, the pipeline that runs from the pump house and storage tank near the airstrip to the existing ASTs, the slough area near the pump house and pipeline, and the drinking water at the school. The generator shack area had diesel range organics (DRO) readings in the soil up to 10,600 mg/kg with eight out of thirteen samples exceeding ADEC cleanup levels of 250 mg/kg. In all thirteen samples Benzene, Ethylbenzene, Toluene, and Xylenes (BTEX) was below ADEC cleanup levels. The AST near the teacher’s house had two samples submitted for laboratory analysis, DRO was found at 2,880 mg/kg and 554 mg/kg. BTEX was below ADEC cleanup levels. Five soil samples from the pipeline were submitted for laboratory analysis with all samples above ADEC cleanup levels for DRO ranging from 2,010 mg/kg to 39,100 mg/kg. BTEX was below ADEC cleanup levels. Twenty samples from the pump house and storage tank near the airstrip was screened for DRO and BTEX, with three samples submitted for laboratory analysis. DRO ranged from 2,500 mg/kg to 32,400 mg/kg and BTEX was below ADEC cleanup levels. The slough had four soil samples screened and none sent on for laboratory analysis. There were two water samples taken from the slough, they were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and BTEX. In the northwest sample TPH was 0.5 mg/L with no BTEX and in the southwest sample there were no TPH or Benzene detected, all other analytes were below cleanup levels. The drinking water at the school was sampled once before the water treatment filtration and softening system. The TPH was over cleanup levels at 0.5 mg/L and BTEX was below cleanup levels. Further characterization and sampling is recommended. Pam Clemens

12/3/2001 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Report titled: "Site Reconnaissance Report Lime Village, Alaska, dated 12-2001" from Bristol Environmental & Engineering Services Corporation was reviewed 2-24-09. Site work was done 10-12-2001. In the area of the Iditarod Area School District Tank Farm, samples collected from 5 feet bgs in areas near the school and downhill from the tank farm contained DRO concentration up to 2,840 mg/kg. Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) sampling results were all non-detect. The contamination in the soil was determined to be from fuel leaks that occured related primarily to broken piping observed in the crawlspace under the school. It was recommended in this report that additional sampling in the area north of the school and east of the generator shack be done to identify the extent of the contamination. Groundwater sampling is also recommended in these areas. Pam Clemens

3/22/2016 Update or Other Action Sent letter with a site history and request for contact by May 1, 2016 to discuss this site. BRIEF SITE HISTORY: Contamination was originally identified in July of 1994 during an assessment of the Iditarod Area School District (IASD) leasehold areas. Five areas were investigated during the assessment; the former aboveground storage tank (AST) at the school near the generator shack, the existing AST near the teacher’s housing, the pipeline that runs from the pump house and storage tanks near the airstrip to the existing ASTs, the slough area near the pump house and pipeline, and the drinking water at the school. Diesel range organics (DRO) was the primary contaminant of concern during the 1994 investigation. The concentration of DRO varied at each location, but was present above the ADEC migration-to-groundwater (MTG) cleanup levels at all of the soil investigation areas (except the slough). Soil samples collected from the slough were not submitted for laboratory analysis. Samples collected from the schools drinking water exhibited a concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) at 0.5 mg/l, which exceeded the regulatory levels at that time. The schools drinking water well was resampled in 2001 as part of a Lime Village Site Reconnaissance project. The purpose of the site reconnaissance was to investigate the presence and extent of contamination at two bulk AST facilities in Lime Village, one of which was the IASD tank farm. DRO was not detected in the samples collected from the schools drinking water. DRO was present above ADEC cleanup levels in the tank farm soils. Joshua Barsis
