Problems/Comments

This OU was not investigated due potential unexploded ammunition. Formerly used defense site (FUDS). Also known as Sand Bay Navy Station. Used as a naval advance fueling station. No human population. Site is in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Site had up to 680 personnel in the past. All improvements were abandoned. Last staff assigned were Rutkowski and Halverson.

4/3/2012 CERCLA PA Meeting held with USACE AK district to discuss status of MMRP effort for site. Preliminary Assessment (PA) was completed by USACE in January 2007 with out ADEC participation. The (PA) recomended No DoD Action Indicated (NDAI) based on a brief site visit, records reviews, and historical aerial photographs. However the site visit team did not physically inspect all of the Munitions Related Features (MRFs) at the facility. The Site Visit did not identify Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) gun emplacements for reconnaisance nor were all of the ammo storage facilities visited. USACE agreed to perform a Site Inspection for MMRP issues at Great Sitkin. The SI will include a review of historical documentation and historical aeraial photography, and a site visit. During the site visit AAA gun emplacements identified and the remainder of the ammo storage bunkers will be investigated. Guy Warren

12/13/2023 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC completed a review of the Draft 2021 Phase II Remedial Investigation Report for Great Sitkin Island. The report details efforts to identify site features that have contamination from historical military property use and provides a regulatory summary to identify site features recommended for No Further Action (NFA), closure under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), or closure under CERCLA-exclusion under the petroleum exclusion. Of the 93 features and Little Fox Creek area discussed in the report, twelve former military features – two battery features and ten transformer features – were recommended for NFA. The remaining features are recommended for further characterization in future investigation efforts. Tim Sharp
