Problems/Comments

5/28/90 train derailment of 18-19 train cars spilled a mixture of 165,000 gallons jet A, diesel #2 and #4 fuel into wetlands, beaver ponds, and Goldstream Creek. Surface water, groundwater, and soil contamination from petroleum hydrocarbons. 81,000 gallons of product recovered as of 6/15/90. AKRR conducted tilling and nutrient application to enhance biodegradation rates. As of 1995 sampling event, POL contamination limited to east and west swale area. 7/90 samples indicated up to 9.2 ppm TPH in surface water and 62,000 ppm TPH in soil. 12/11/1990 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = SI - Site Investigation). Draft site assessment of Dunbar Siding derailment and spill. Soil samples indicated up to 62,000 ppm TPH, 307 ppm xylenes, and up to 42 ppm PNAs. Groundwater samples collected in 8/90 and 9/90 showed up to 81 ppb TPH, 238 ppb xylenes, and 0.3 ppb PNAs. Surface water samples collected in 6/90 and 7/90 from Goldstream Creek showed less than 10 ppb BTEX compounds and 23,000 ppb TPH. Surface water samples from the west and east ponds in 7/90 and 8/90 indicated up to 9230 ppb TPH. Sediment samples from the east and west ponds showed up to 680 ppm TPH and 0.38 ppm xylenes. Preliminary environmental assessment indicated reduced levels of microinvertebrates, no detectable PNA compounds in fish, and low levels of n-alkanes in fish muscle tissue. 12/18/1995 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = SI - Site Investigation). ADEC received a sample report from sampling in June 95. Results where groundwater is impacted (MW-6 600 ppb DRO); "Soil 5" - 11,000 ppm (0.5 ft) and 26,000 ppm (2.5 ft); "Soil 1" - 12,300 ppm DRO; "Soil 6" - 4,200 ppm DRO. 4/9/1998 Site Characterization Workplan Approved (Old R:Base Action Code = RI - Remedial Investigation). Workplan describes soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater sampling to be conducted by ARRC contractor in July 1998.
