11/8/2005 | Update or Other Action | Staff reviewed site summaries for 23 IRP sites at Clear. The following comment was sent to the Air Force for this site: Site 15 (WP014) is a manmade percolation pond that receives cooling water from both the technical site and the power plant. It has been named Lake Sansing. The pond is lined with fly ash and top soil to slow infiltration to groundwater. Sediments have been sampled and analyzed and exceedances of the NOAA SqUIRTs for cooper, chromium, lead, and mercury have been found. The lake has been stocked with fish and recreational fishing does occur. The Air Force is proposing to conduct an RI, followed by a FS, PP, and ROD. DEC concurs. | Debra Caillouet |

The work plan has been developed to determine if there are concentrations of contaminants present in the surface water or sediments of Lake Sansing that could pose a threat to human health or the environment. The drainage ditches leading into Lake Sansing will also be sampled to assist in determining a source if contamination is found in the lake. One monitoring well will be installed upgradient of the lake to determine if groundwater has been affected. | Debra Caillouet |

The results of this investigation show that there is no significant risk to human health, but there are impacts to benthic organisms. This is limiting the food supply for stocked fish in the lake. While no action may be necessary to address the risks to human health or fish health, DEC suggests that the lake not be stocked in the future. | Debra Caillouet |
