Problems/Comments

684 empty drums containing 3,025 gallons of liquid waste, 100 drums contain POL 11,075 cubic yards contaminated soil (POL), wood and metal debris, and contaminated pond. 600 foot radius sector surrounded by private residences. Cross reference file 400.38.001. Alaska Gold Co. currently mining near site. At least 25 drums thought to be RCRA qualified. Phase II review, ADEC- Beelman commented 1/16/92. ACOE# F10AK005202. 1/18/1996 Meeting or Teleconference Held ADEC staff, Tamar Stephens and Clint Adler, met with USACE representatives, James Baker, Robert Haviland, Gus Olson, John Jacobson, Curtis King, Ron Pflum, and IT representative Keith Walker, for update on status of Nome sites. This is the only site that the USACE considers may have groundwater issue. (Several other sites have groundwater contaminated by mining leachate). Hundreds of contaminated areas were identified, and classified by USACE as no action, below clean-up levels, and above clean-up levels. 17 major areas identified. Some areas, ponded from thermokarsting due to presence of barrels, are being remediated passively, anaerobically with addition of nitrogen. Mr. Walker stated that this is a commonly used technology in lower 48. Tamar Stephens
