10/2/2003 Interim Removal Action Approved Reviewed and approved final closure report for removal of petroleum contaminated soil. Report describes excavation and removal of approximately 15-cubic yards of petroleum-contaminated soil at a former biovent location at Davidson’s Landing. Work was performed in summer of 2000, but DEC did not receive report until Sept. 2003. The biovent, located adjacent to an un-named slough off of the Kaviruk River, was in operation during a cleanup action during 1994 through 1996 and was designated as Biovent #1. Elevated levels of diesel and residual range organics remained in Biovent #1 soil at the end of 1996 cleanup activities. During the 2000 removal action, the soil was excavated to permafrost, a depth of three to four feet, and transported off site for treatment and disposal. Confirmation sampling showed maximum levels of 23 mg/kg diesel range organics and 89 mg/kg residual range organics at the bottom of the excavation. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and semivolatile organic compounds were not detected. Based on this information, no further cleanup is required at the Biovent #1 location Tamar Stephens

12/2/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed and sent approval letter for final Remedial Action Technical Memorandum. The report presents the results of sampling in 2008 of former Biovent No. 2 and the former Landfarm where petroleum contaminated soil was treated during a 1994 through 1996 cleanup at the site. The report also presents results of sediment and surface water sampling of the slough. Concur with report conclusions that no further cleanup is needed at Biovent No. 2 or at the Landfarm. Concur that sample results show no violations of Alaska Water Quality Standards of the slough. (Field work was conducted in 2008, but final report was sent to DEC in November 2011.) Tamar Stephens
2/11/2013 CERCLA Proposed Plan DEC approved the Corps of Engineers Proposed Plan for Davidson's Landing. 12/23/2014 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other ADEC received a report titled Final Removal Action Report – Davidson’s Landing FUDS, Alaska, on December 11, 2014. This report addresses actions taken to remove partially buried drums from the site known as Davidson’s Landing. Five drums were removed from a small slough draining into the larger Unnamed Slough that bisects the site and additional drum parts were removed from the Unnamed Slough. Two more drums were found on land along the west bank of the Unnamed Slough. None of the drums were intact enough to hold fluids. Soil or sediment samples were collected from directly beneath each drum or drum carcass and analyzed for diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, (BTEX). All results were below applicable action levels. Impacts were minimal and site restoration was not required. ADEC has reviewed this report, finds that it adequately meets the applicable requirements of 18 AAC 75.340, .355, and .360, and accepts it as final. Remedial action at this site has fulfilled the requirements laid out in the September 2013 Decision Document and the site is ready for closure. Meredith Savage

Contaminant Information

Name Level Description Media Comments
DRO Between Method 2 Migration to Groundwater and Human Health/Ingestion/Inhalation Soil DRO with concentrations of 530 to 1060 mg/kg remains in a small area of sediment (approximately 30' x 15')on the west edge of the Unnamed Slough. These concentrations are greater than Table B2 Method Two Under 40" Zone Migration to Groundwater cleanup levels, but less than Inhalation and Ingestion cleanup levels. An updated Conceptual Site Model shows that there is low risk to no risk at the site. (Note: Sediment is the impacted media. "Soil" was selected as the Impacted Media because a selection had to be made to complete this form and "Sediment" was not provided as an option.
