Problems/Comments

4/22/91 report that air emissions from site operations is killing trees and a toxic slurry residue is being dumped on to the ground. Possible contaminants are: nitric acid, bromine, arsenic, sulfuric acid in unknown amounts. Subsequent investigation noted trees damaged by insects and development. Slurry is a mining waste and may be exempt from RCRA. Presence of contamination not documented and human health impact unknown. A phone conversation with Don R. Cloyd on 5/16/97 confirmed that Geosearch vacated the site in 1989 or 1990. Mr Cloyd acquired the site from Alaska Fine Gold and Recovery. Last staff assigned were Vickaryous, Kleweno, and Frechione.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
4/22/1991 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). Bill Lamoreaux visited the site and observed small, wheel barrow size piles of black sand. Geosearch refines materials such as placer black sands by use of nitric acid, sulfuric acid, bromine, and arsenic. Dying trees in area attributed to development and insects. Residue (black sand) from processing is a mining waste and may be RCRA exempt. Black sand may be a solid waste problem to be handled by DHHS. Department of Labor likely to do inspection of site. Further assessment needed. Bill Lamoreaux
