Site Report: Valdez Creek Mine - Dam Blow-Out
We make every effort to ensure the data presented here is accurate based on the best available information currently on file with DEC. It is therefore subject to change as new information becomes available. We recommend contacting the assigned project staff prior to making decisions based on this information.
Problems/Comments
Dam blow-out of 60 million gallon water reservoir carrying mining tailings into Valdez Creek floodplain. Same dam had a second blow-out on May 25, 1992. Resulting in a loss of 15 million gallons of processed water into floodplain. The mining tailings were re-deposited (had been previously pulled back from stream after first blow-out). Concern of metals, turbidity and settable solids adversely impacting stream (Extensive effort in winter of 1991 to construct a stream diversion channel which Fish and Game required a fish catching basin be installed to capture Grayling for manual transportation up river for stream diversion). Last staff assigned was Wien.
