Problems/Comments
FMUS removed three tanks and associated piping near Chena #6 pump. Two were removed in 1997 and one in 1998. Contamination was mostly removed, but there was residual under the tanks and possibly under some of the fuel lines. These were subsequently removed and confirmation samples submitted in a separate report. The main excavation, down to approx. 15 feet, was clean at the bottom and no groundwater was encountered. There were monitoring wells in the area for other releases. Significant groundwater contamination from these tanks is not suspected. COCs are DRO and BTEX.

7/3/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed. | Ann Farris |
6/17/2009 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | The initial ranking was redone based on further review of the file. There is a possibility of remaining subsurface contamination at the site. The records indicate excavation was stopped due to funding limitations and it's unclear the concentrations at the limits of the excavation. There is a memo from Laura Noland, former DEC PM, that the City planned to address this issue with confirmation sampling and treatment if necessary. There is a letter from the city stating that excavation was done, but no sample results or other details. Renee Evans from DEC requested that final documentation in 1998 and 2000 and did not receive it. Personnel at the city and DEC have changed numerous times. In 1998,Laura wrote a memo to the file recommending closure after this issue was addressed. The City contact is now Mike Schmetzer 590-3701. Staff left a message with Mike requesting information on the site. | Ann Farris |
6/22/2009 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | The City of Fairbanks found the final report with confirmation sample results. The subsurface contamination was completely removed from this area, including beneath the fuel lines (see the August 1991 Report). Based on this information, DEC determines the site meets applicable cleanup levels and no longer poses a risk. The Cleanup complete with no institutional controls letter was sent today. | Ann Farris |
