Problems/Comments

During a 9/30/1991 inspection, ADEC noted evidence of numerous oil spills including a sheen on surface hot spring water which runs through the resort. During the summer of 1991, a 200-gallon spill occurred. Extent of contamination and threat to human health unknown. Problem sites: Old Laundry Building (location of old generator) with underground water contamination, New Generator Building with 200-gallon spill and overflowing waste oil buckets, Fuel Storage Area in parking lot has oil stains.

"Monitoring Removal of Underground Fuel Storage Tanks at Chena Hot Springs Resort, Alaska" received at Fairbanks ADEC office. Two 1,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks were removed on August 8, 1990. Four soil samples and field screening with PID did not detect hydrocarbon presence above June 20, 1990 draft ADEC cleanup guidelines (100 ppm Total Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons; 0.5 ppm benzene; and 10 ppm total benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes).
