Problems/Comments

The site is located on a 385 acre parcel on the west side of Cook Inlet. In the early 1970's, Tyonek leased the parcel to Kodiak Lumber Mill, which constructed substantial improvements. These include a chip mill, warehouses, a 1,475-foot dock, an air strip, 15 mobile homes, 4 bunk houses, 5 houses, 6 duplexes, 3 shop buildings, an office building, a recreation hall, a mess hall, an approximate 400,000 gallon fuel tank farm, and sewage, water and electrical utilities. Kodiak Lumber Mill (KLM) used the property until it went bankrupt in 1983. Tyonek then took possession of the parcel of property. Seven above ground fuel storage tanks, approximately 400,000-gallon total capacity, were present. Obvious signs of petroleum contamination was observed around these tanks. A waste disposal site was located between the fuel storage tank site and Cook Inlet. The waste debris consisted mainly of metal and solid waste; however, numerous 55-gallon drums and small barrels were also found. Some of these drums were leaking petroleum products (appeared to be used oil). Former Drum Storage Area soil samples had 190,000 to 340,000 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) for residual range organics (RRO) and 57,000 to 69,000 mg/kg for diesel range organics (DRO). The maintenance facility had evidence of numerous petroleum spills. Facility operations closed down in approximately 1983, when KLM went bankrupt. The KLM runway is adjacent to this site and considered to be part of it. Coordinates listed for this site represent the location of the Former Drum Storage Area.
