Update or Other Action |
Phone coversation with personnel from AWWU working on closing out AK Electroplating discharge permit. The owner is intending to sell the property and AWWU personnel are concerned about uncharacterized metals contamination inside of the shop. Due to the nature of this business, it is anticipated that a Phase I and possibly a Phase II would be conducted prior to the sale, and ADEC asked AWWU personnel to communicate with the owner so that the owner did not take any steps to alter the structure that would inhibit the success of a Phase I or Phase II, such as pouring a concrete slab over the former tanks area. |

Site Visit |
Site visit on 3/2/10 with consultant and realtors. An oil/water separator was located with sludge that will require sampling prior to disposal. The polishing area had an intact concrete floor and is not considered a source area at this time. Investigation will focus in the tank pit area and expected to consist of soil sampling and groundwater sampling, if necessary. |

Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other |
Reviewed work plan for Additional Phase II Assessment. 8 soil borings will be advanced to a depth of 15 feet bgs with samples collected at two foot intervals to 6 feet bgs, then again at 8-10 feet bgs and 13-15 feet bgs. Samples will be analyzed for copper, nickel, and cyanide, with the shallowest samples analyzed first, then if necessary, the deeper samples. The oil/water separator will be checked for leaks by filling with water. |

Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other |
Reviewed additional characterization work plan submitted via email. The extent of metals contamination has been defined in all but one area where nickel and cyanide exceeded cleanup levels in the sample from 13-15 ft bgs. Two additional boreholes will be advanced to groundwater, one in the area of the nickel and cyanide exceedance and another near the oil/water separator. Soil and groundwater samples will be collected, but the groundwater samples will only be analyzed if soil contamination is found near the groundwater interface. |

Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other |
Reviewed Additional Limited Phase II Environmental Site Assessment. Two additional soil bortings were advanced and sampled. Soil boring SB9 was placed adjacent to SB7 where nickel contamination exceeded ADEC cleanup levels in the 13-15 foot sample and SB10 was placed next to the oil/water separator. No hydrocarbon impacts were evident at the oil/water separator and the sample from approximately 50 feet bgs at SB9 did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels. An attempt was made to collect a groundwater sample from approximately 50 feet bgs, the interval where groundwater was first encountered. This interval consisted of grey silt and groundwater was not present in sufficient enough quantity to collect a sample. |
