Problems/Comments

Two 10K gallon heating oil tanks failed their TTTs. The tanks were removed in 1993, at which time the primary source was reported to be leaking supply-line piping from the northern tank. 625 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed but residual contamination was left under the generator building to the south, electric transformers to the west, and at the base of the excavation (15 to 21 ft bgs). The highest DRO concentration out of 15 soil samples was 9,600 mg/kg, at 13 ft bgs in the middle of the excavation. Six borings were installed by Hart Crowser in 2001. The DRO concentration in the middle of the excavation was 889 mg/kg at 40 ft bgs. No benzene has been detected in the soil. TEX and some PAHs have been detected but below cleanup levels. Seven wells were installed in this area between 2001 and 2003. MW-1 and MW-2 had 0.09 and 0.02 feet of product in them in 2003. NPS installed a petrotrap to remove product from MW-1 in the fall of 2003. Product has not been seen since 2003. Site has also been called "Pumphouse", "Powerhouse", and "Bldg. 54". This site is sometime confused with the Hotel Oil Spill (220.38.001). Building 51 (220.38.006) is located near this site and groundwater monitoring results are currently being reported for Building 51 and Buildng 54 together.

8/19/2009 Spill Transferred from Prevention Preparedness and Response Program Spill transfered by PERP staff Wesley Ghormley. Spill no. 07309921304; spill date 8/1/07; PERP file no. 220.02.001; substance = diesel; quantity = ~20 gallons; source description: 100-gallon heating oil tank. On August 1, 2007 a 100 gallon HOT was being loaded onto a truck with a forklift when it fell releasing ~20 gallons of diesel onto the ground. The report stated that the forklift operator assumed the tank was empty. Tammy Scholton, environmental staff with the National Park Service, reported that this site has been previously listed as a contaminated site with ADEC. Wes Ghormley and John Ebel with ADEC PERP visited the site on May 13, 2008 to investigate and document the spill. A final report was presented to ADEC along with an approval to transport request. Thirty tons of contaminated soil were transported to OIT for thermal remediation on 09/13/2008. Mitzi Read
