Problems/Comments
Abandoned bus contains six to seven 50 pound bags of asbestos. Also on site 25 sealed 3 gallon containers of grease, one 35 gallon container leaking petroleum product, five drums unknown contents and 22 drums leaking petroleum products. Manley Hot Springs drinking water well located 1,000 meters from site and human health impact unknown at this time. Need to determine and contact property owner (possibly Bean Ridge Native Corp.) and give them chance to cleanup before pursuing other means. Property was previously owned by Bobby Miller, who reportedly placed the material on site. Cleanup of the site began in 1998 when the State of Alaska contained and removed 3.6 tons of asbestos and asbestos contaminated material, twenty-two drums of used oil, sixteen overpacked leaking drums of grease and seven drums of petroleum contaminated soils. The cleanup report stated that there is an unknown amount of remaining contamination. In 2019, ADEC staff attempted to access the two properties where the bus, drums, and bags of asbestos were located. ADEC was unable to locate the property owners or get access to the properties. However, based upon information in the file, it appears that the majority of the soil staining beneath the leaking drums was removed, and ADEC does not expect significant contaminant levels to remain. ADEC determined after a site visit in September 2019 and further review of the administrative files that site status should change from Active to Unconfirmed.
