Problems/Comments

Power outage at SU-1 control circuit caused pump to fill and overflow. Containment and cleanup commenced immediately, and 270 yards of oily snow and soil excavated from site. It was stored in the east tank farm area. An isolated area of residual range hydrocarbon contamination was found near boring B-2 which was excavated and found to have no further contamination. The sump has been modified to prevent recurrence of problem. This site is cross referenced with Alyeska VMT SU-1 Sump 1 (historic spills to the site) both areas of concern are associated with this file number 1200.38.015, both have been successfully remediated with excavation and stockpiling. ADEC issued a “No further action required” letter dated February 2, 1993 from Robert Flint, Acting Regional Administrator of the Pipeline Corridor Regional Office (State Pipeline Coordinator’s Office)

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
8/15/1991 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = SI - Site Investigation). Alyeska sent in workplan for SU-1 pump spill outlining site investigation, drilling operations, areas to be sampled, lab analysis to be used, work schedule after approval by DEC. Scott Rose
1/30/1992 Update or Other Action VMT, SU-1 Sump Spill Site Investigation Report received by ADEC. 3 soil borings were installed near the SU-1 sump. One boring was placed in close proximity to the source of the spill and two borings directly down slope (relative to bedrock dip in the area) from the spill area in the northerly direction. Laboratory analyses indicate that only one soil sample near boring B-2 had RRPH above cleanup levels. America North states that this area of contamination appears to be unrelated to the SU-1 sump spill and likely an isolated area of petroleum contamination. America North recommends that the area of contamination be excavated and contaminated soils treated ex-situ. Confirmatory samples should be taken after the excavation. Deborah Williams
1/12/1993 Update or Other Action Follow-up to SU-1 Sump Spill Site Investigation Report was received by ADEC. On September 9, 1992, an area of B-2 was excavated to a depth of 8 feet. No staining or odors were noted in the dig site. Sampling was conducted at the 8 foot depth of the excavation. Analysis of this sample showed ND for BTEX and TPH. Deborah Williams
2/2/1993 Site Closure Approved Site closure approved. Bob Flint
1/6/1995 Site Number Identifier Changed Old region = 40. Scott Rose
4/21/1998 Site Ranked Using the AHRM Ranking action added now because it was not added when the site was originally ranked. Bill Petrik
