Problems/Comments

Extensive contamination in and around Point McCartney to both land and marine waters. Sources include: tank farm, broken batteries, generator shack, major spill in 1992. Substances include: petroleum products, solvents, battery acid, and lead. Responsible party (RP) has retained contractor to assist in cleanup. RP is also responsible for similar contamination existing at the Kake Truck shop as well and at a number of other locations. The RP has done what they are financially able to do regarding the contamination. As of 2015, the biocells on site were overgrown with alders. The RP has removed the battery and other debris from the site. When the RP is financially able, a clean up will occur.

They plan on using petroleum contaminated soil in a biocell for asphalt. In addition, scrap metal, used oil, and empty drums have been shipped off the island by Pool Engineering out of Ketchikan.
