Problems/Comments
USAF constructed landing strip, pumphouse, storage sites, POL pump station, POL storage tanks, Quonset huts, warehouses, living quarters in the 1940's. The base was never completely finished before the USAF decided to abandon it in place.
Defense Environmental Restoration Account inventory report noted the following:
- Batteries
- Seventy 55-gallon drums of lube oil and aviation fuel
- Contaminated Soil
- 100 paint and varnish cans
- Various wood and metal debris
In 1996, DEC issued a permit for 3 landfill locations at the site. The landfills were closed by DEC in 2002.
1986/1987 cleanup effort entailed the following:
- buildings demolished or burned. Debris taken to landfills.
- one landfill was designated for asbestos materials.
- no liquid petroleum products were disposed of in the landfills, they were containerized and taken offsite.
- excavated contaminated soil was placed in the permitted landfill
2023- FUDS and the USAF have no plans for further remediation at this site.
