Problems/Comments

122 gallon diesel spill and subsequent excavation to 3' appears to have removed most of the contaminated soil above acceptable levels. No detectable levels of contamination down gradient. Excavated soils were treated and disposed of in the 1994 Cordova Roads project. Need to complete cleanup of soils under the transformer pad and building when they are decommissioned.

10/26/2007 Conditional Closure Approved ADEC has determined that the investigation and cleanup actions employed at the FAA Cordova Station, MALSR Facility, were effective in removing the majority of soil contamination at the site. There still remains soil contamination with DRO concentrations above 5,000 mg/kg beneath the building, and a small plume of groundwater contamination near the building. Considering the isolation of this site, lack of nearby drinking water wells, high organics in surrounding soil, and the impracticality of closing the Cordova airport to access the remaining contaminated soil, ADEC will grant conditional closure to this site. The conditional closure will have the condition that upon closure of the airport, this site will be investigated and remediated, if necessary. Until that time, the presence of the residual petroleum contamination will be documented in the Contaminated Sites database and records. Daniel Fremgen
10/26/2007 Institutional Control Record Established Upon closure of the airport, this site will be investigated and remediated, if necessary. Daniel Fremgen
