Problems/Comments
Updated May 7, 2018: The USCG Housing Units are located on Hanagita Road in the northwest corner of Valdez, Alaska. Structures present include eight Housing Units consisting of four dwellings each, Garage Unit, Community Building, Carpenter’s Shop, former Carpenter’s Shed, Department of Public Works & Engineering Buildings. The USCG Valdez sites has been listed on the DEC Contaminated Sites Database since May 10, 1993. Historical records for the site have not been located; however, the database specifically points to USCG Housing Unit #6 as an Area of Concern. In July through September 2017, several USTs at the USCG Valdez sector were replaced with ASTs. Petroleum contamination exceeding the applicable cleanup levels remained in the excavations at the following locations: Housing Unit #6 (TK19); Community Building (TK03)/Parking Area; and the Old Carpenter Shed (Service Storage Building)/Eastern Public Works UST.
