Problems/Comments
History/location of this site is limited, due to numerous data gaps. In 1983, a spill occurred from a 37,000-gallon horizontal steel diesel fuel tank, due to vandalism. The location of this tank is on property owned by the City of Newhalen (which has been leased by Kijik Fuel Facility, then the Yukon Fuels Tank Farm to the now current, as of 2011, decommissioned Crowley Tank Farm). Reportedly there was no liner, and 35,000 gallons of fuel went into the ground. A cleanup effort removed an estimated 32,000 gallons of diesel, by digging test pits and allowing the fuel to fill the test pits to be recovered. The PERP database has no info on this spill, therefore amount, extent, and exact location of this spill is unknown. A “stone’s throw” away from this area, and 50 feet from a marshy area, between the sewage lagoon and the lift station, free product was discovered when a sewer clean out hole was dug, in August 1999. In September 1999, PERP responded, to this spill event. Note: this site is collocated with the active contaminated site File: 2619.38.001 Crowley Jet A Fuel Tank 471 Newhalen Tank Farm.

9/15/1983 | Update or Other Action | History/location of this site is limited, due to numerous data gaps. In 1983, a spill occurred from a 37,000-gallon horizontal steel diesel fuel tank, due to vandalism. The location of this tank is at the old utility tank Farm (which was the City of Newhalen/ Kijik Fuel Facility, then the Yukon Fuels TF to the now current( as of 2009) decommissioned Crowley TF). | Grant Lidren |
9/15/1986 | Update or Other Action | Sewer trench excavated in 1986, 200 ft. downgradient of 1983 spill. No visual or olfactory evidence of petroleum. | Grant Lidren |
9/15/1999 | Update or Other Action | A “stone’s throw” away from the 1983 spill area, and 50 feet from a marshy area, between the sewage lagoon and the lift station, free product was discovered when a sewer clean out hole was dug, in August 1999. In September 1999, PERP responded, to this spill event. True location of all spill events has not been verified.Soil and water samples collected and analyzed (2 months later) indicated DRO up to 1.72 mg/L in the GW. | Grant Lidren |
10/6/1999 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | PRP letter sent to the City of Newhalen and Kijik Corporation on this date. | Grant Lidren |
6/12/2007 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Intitial Ranking Complete for Source Area: 72843 (Autogenerated Action) | |
3/9/2011 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | On this date, ADEC held a teleconference with the City of Newhalen, ANTHC, Crowley, and Oasis to discuss the site’s history and proposed cleanup actions. | Grant Lidren |
6/21/2018 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | PRP letter mailed to the City of Newhalen on this date. | Grant Lidren |
6/7/2021 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DNA submitted the Additional Site Characterization Report, dated 4/16/2021. On 8/11/2021 ADEC reviewed the report. The purpose of the additional site characterization work is to better understand the location (vertically and horizontally) of fuel contaminated soil remaining at the site that is resulting in a persistent dissolved-phase petroleum hydrocarbon plume in the shallow unconfined groundwater aquifer so as to design a remedial approach that will reduce or eliminate the plume and the risk posed to human health via the groundwater exposure pathway. | Daniela Fawcett |
8/11/2021 | Update or Other Action | On 8/11/2021 ADEC reviewed the Additional Site Characterization Report for the Newhalen Bulk Fuel Storage in Newhalen, AK; dated April 16, 2021.
1/24/2022 | Update or Other Action | DNA submitted letter dated 1/21/2022 describing decommissioning and replacement of the damaged monitoring well MW-8. A 2-inch diameter well was installed with the screen placed between 1.5 and 6.5 ft bgs. The groundwater table was observed at 2 ft bgs. Soil samples appear to have been collected at 2 ft and 7 ft bgs, which were analyzed for BTEX, GRO, DRO, RRO, and TOC. No contaminants were detected. | Janice Wiegers |
