Building 414: In 1996 2464 pounds of ash and soil was excavated and sent off site for disposal. Confirmation sample results showed a slightly elevated level of arsenic remaining, however this is not believed to pose an unacceptable risk as it was subsurface, groundwater is not used for drinking water in this area and there are no residents at the site. A conditional closure was given for the ash. Lead is present in this are from lead-based paint. DEC requested that additional characterization occur for lead. |

Site Characterization Report Approved |
ADEC reviewed and approved the “Draft Report: Haines Debris Removal and Release Investigation Report. Haines, Alaska” for the FAA Haines Station site in Haines, dated November 2018. The Report was submitted via email on November 19, 2018 by Brice Environmental. Fieldwork was conducted on June 18-22, 2018 and generally consisted of removing debris and collecting soil samples for laboratory analysis. The objective of this field work was to remove debris and collect analytical sampling near previous structures. DRO, lead, dioxin, and some VOC's were detected in soil above ADEC's Migration to Groundwater cleanup levels.
Four new Source Areas were added to this site and each Source Area location received an initial ranking for the exposure pathways. The four new Sources areas are the Engine Generator Building 619, the Grease Pit, the Quarters Building 102 battery, and H Marker Building battery. ADEC concurs with Brice Environmental’s recommendations for further investigation.
A work plan to address groundwater ingestion pathway and remaining soil contamination is due March 15, 2019. |

Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other |
Revision reviewed and changes accepted.
A remedial investigation and remedial action were conducted at the Haines VHF field station. Soil and groundwater samples were collected at the Former Generator Building 619 and Former Grease Pit. Remedial action was conducted at the NDB tuner building and former lead acid battery sites. At the remedial action sites a total of 26 cubic yards of lead contaminated soil was removed. All confirmation results indicated the lead was below residential use cleanup levels. At the Former Generator Building there were soil sample exceedances of DRO and various PAH. Groundwater samples exceeded cleanup levels for DRO. At the Former Grease Pit there were soil sample exceedances of DRO, various PAH, and dioxin (TCDD). No groundwater samples were collected. |
