Problems/Comments
3 areas of contamination from heavy petroleum products. Sources include an old fuel farm, mechanical building and rock pit. At this time surface waters are unaffected. 300-800 cubic yards of dirty soil. Some excavation of top layer of soil has occurred. Otherwise, most contamination has been left undisturbed. No potable water or inhabited buildings in the area. Sampling plan and preliminary site assessment submitted. Heceta Island is on the west side of Prince of Wales Island. Last staff assigned were Schlichting and Janes.

9/2/2016 | Update or Other Action | On this date, DEC sent a letter to the USFS requesting action on a number of sites. For this site, DEC stated:A cleanup of petroleum-contaminated soil was conducted at this LTF in the late 1990s. In 1999, the USFS provided a Final Cleanup Report which stated that the confirmation sample results had been inadvertently disposed of. After several discussions, in 2002, DEC requested that soil samples be collected in the area of the excavation in order to determine if all of the contamination was removed. In 2006, DEC approved a site characterization report which documented analytical sample results showing the soil cleanup levels had been met with the previous cleanup actions. Groundwater samples were collected and the analytical result showed concentrations of diesel-range organics above the cleanup level. In 2006, DEC requested additional groundwater samples. To date, the USFS has provided neither a groundwater sampling work plan nor any sample results. DEC requests that the USFS provide a work plan to DEC for review and approval, conduct the groundwater sampling, and provide a report to DEC by June 1, 2017. | Anne Marie Palmieri |
