Problems/Comments
Site in and near village was used by the Army, Air Force and Navy from 1948 and abandoned in 1950s. The majority of contaminants were petroleum in soils. There were also low level PCBsand dioxins. Buried debris which occasionally surfaces from erosion or new construction has been a problem in the community. Unexploded ordnance reportedly buried near or in Troutman Lake. The investigation did not locate any ammo caches.
Site 4 is subdivided into five sub areas. Site 4A was located on top of Sevuokuk Mountain. The site consisted of two collapsed Quonset Huts, debris and three transformer carcasses. A removal action in 1999 removed all the accessible surface debris. Soil sampling found no chemicals of concern in the footprints of the Quonset huts or under the transformer carcasses.
Site 4B was a radar station that burned down. Soil was impacted with DRO and low level dioxin. A removal action in 1999 removed surface debris and contaminated soil to the extent practicable. The site is covered with large boulders with small amounts of soil inbetween. It is inferred there is no groundwater at the site for a considerable depth below groundsurface.
Site 4C was scattered drums partially filled with soil marking ATV trails on the south side of Sevuokuk Mountain. All debris was removed during the 1999 removal action.
Site 4D was three transformer carcassess located near the top of Sevuokuk Mountain. Wipe sampling and soil sampling detected no PCBs. A groundwater sample from an infiltration gallery at the base of the mountain detected no PCBs or BTEX.
Site 4E is the western face of Sevuokuk Mountain. There is miscellaneous debris scattered throughout the area. Since the debris is not considered a safety hazard it is planned to be adddressed through the Native Lands Environmental Mitigation Program. The Gambell site extends west from North Beach to West Beach, south to Nayvaghaq Lake, and east to include portions of Sevuokuk Mountain. The site encompasses the Village of Gambell. Last staff assigned were Noland, Ortelee, Kalu, Stephens, Rutkowski and Brownlee. (rpltr6)
