Problems/Comments
Two 500 gallon emergency generator diesel USTs were removed from service on 6/19-20/98. Three cubic feet of contaminated soil was from UST #1. Soil sampling and analyses for GRO, DRO, and BTEX were performed. All samples were below cleanup levels except for DRO contaminated soil, 1,400 mg/kg, remaining at 15.6’ bgs below former location of UST#2. No GW samples were taken.

6/17/1998 | Update or Other Action | Permission granted to Gilfilian Engineering to directly load and haul contaminated soil, if found, to Alaska Soil Recycling. | Lynne Bush |
12/9/1998 | Update or Other Action | A letter dated 12/7/98 received from Jeannie Carpenter this date indicated that the passive SVE system was disabled by removing the wind turbine, cutting down the pipe and plugging. All efforts will be made to ensure that there are no pathways into the building and this contaminated area will be contained. A work plan will be assembled and discussed in the near future regarding the situation. | Lynne Bush |
12/18/1998 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed and approved the Gilfilian Engineering & Environmental Testing, Inc. "Environmental Site Assessment, Chugiak High School" dated 7/28/98, received by the department 9/10/98. Two 500 gallon emergency generator diesel USTs were removed from service on 6/19-20/98. A total of three cubic feet of contaminated soil was removed from beneath the vent pipe elbow near the building wall and no other contaminated soil was encountered at UST #1. The piping associated with this UST was removed as well. Excavation of contaminated soil beneath UST#2 went to 16’ bgs. At that point contaminated soil extended beneath the wall. Two product lines were abandoned in place due to restricted access and utility conflicts. A passive SVE pipe system was installed to a height of 8’ above grade, 3.9’ north of the masonry wall with a 6’ section of 0.02” slotted screen placed from 10-16’bgs, and capped with a wind turbine to help circulate ambient air. 32.42 tons of contaminated soil was transported to Alaska Soil Recycling for thermal remediation. Soil sampling and analyses for GRO, DRO, and BTEX were performed. All samples were below cleanup levels except for DRO contaminated soil, 1,400 mg/kg, remaining at 15.6’ bgs. The full extent of the contamination was not determined and further cleanup work is prohibited by the building foundation. No GW was encountered but suspected to be ~28’ bgs based on nearby hydrologic data. It is unknown whether GW was contaminated from this release. Action entered by Petrik. | Lynne Bush |

6/4/2008 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed a copy of the R&M Consultants, Inc. 'Underground Storage Tank, Decommissioning/Site Assessment Report, Chugiak High School - Tank #3" dated 2002, received 11/13/02. This is Tank #3 for Facility ID 3108. It is the last tank removed under this facility ID. UST#3, a 1,000 gallon diesel tank was excavated and removed on 7/18/02 after it was found during renovation of the school. There was no contamination related with this tank based on investigative findings. | Bill Petrik |
12/31/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78069 Former 500 Gallon Diesel Emergency Generator UST#2. This site was actually closed in the June 8, 2004 letter from ADEC signed by Jim Frechione. I will attach the ROD and change the status to Clenaup Complete without ICs as per the ROD. | Pam Clemens |
