Problems/Comments

A 5,000 gallon heating oil tank was closed in place when diesel from tank overfills were discovered in November 1995. Soil borings indicated that soil near the tank contained less than 4,000 mg/kg DRO. The tank is partially under the Arctic Health Building and removal and reconstruction costs were estimated at $1,000,000. Groundwater is over 80 feet bgs. The contaminated soil remaining at the site do not pose a risk to human health or the environment.

The subsurface soil contamination does not pose a risk to human health or the environment and will naturally attenuate over time. Diesel range organics (DRO) contamination was detected at 3,900 mg/kg in soil borings at the base of the tank. Kim DeRuyter
