Problems/Comments

Petroleum contamination from chronic leaks and spills from fuel transfers. Extensive diesel contamination throughout area. Sources appear to be fuel line, vehicle fuel line, and pumphouse. Depth of contamination unknown. Site assessment performed 9/93 for pumphouse next to village tank farm. Pumphouse serves all village fuel needs.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
3/8/1994 Update or Other Action Responded to NSB's Site Characterization document. Report indicates that diesel contamination is widespread around the pumphouse and fuel line. Depth of contamination not determined. ADEC concurred that the next phase could combine excavation with assessment. ADEC did not agree with report's proposal to use dirty dirt to build berm for new tank system. NSB plans to continue work this summer, pending funds.(Old R:Base Action Code = SA1R - Phase I SA Review (CS/LUST)). McLoone comments: samples collected limited to surface samples and only five laboratory analytical results reported up to 8,400 ppm DRO by 8100. Both GRO and RRO reported as not detected which is unusual if not suspect. Ben Thomas
4/18/1994 Site Added to Database Petroleum contamination. Ben Thomas
6/20/1994 Update or Other Action (Old R:Base Action Code = RPL2 - Site Information Request Letter). Sent PRP-CS Database Notification Letter to RP requesting update and more environmental information concerning contaminated site. RP received letter, but no response yet. Jeff Peterson
7/6/2005 Update or Other Action Site visit conducted in 2003 found the pumphouse had been decommissioned in the 1990's. PID readings did not indicate contamination at the former pumphouse, however clean fill had apparently been brought in after the pumphouse was decommissioned. Bill O'Connell
7/26/2007 Meeting or Teleconference Held ADEC staff met with representatives from NSB and their consultant to review open status village files and to propose responses to the ADEC's request for further information and characterization at this site. Bill O'Connell
9/21/2007 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Bill O'Connell
10/25/2007 Meeting or Teleconference Held Meeting today with NSB and their consultant. This site remains an active fueling facility, however additional work needs to be done to characterize the nature and extent of contamination from the former fueling facility. Bill O'Connell
5/6/2008 Update or Other Action Meeting with NSB and their consultant and submittal of Areawide Contaminated Sites report (dated April 2008) for Anaktuvuk Pass. Data QA/QC conducted. This report includes figures and data from the 2003 investigations. Petroleum contaminants were not detected in soil samples collected at the former pumphouse, however the area had been regraded and only surface samples were collected. Reportedly site contains large "clasts" that may make future sampling efforts also limited. Bill O'Connell
12/8/2011 Meeting or Teleconference Held Meeting today to discuss site status and potential future activities at the site. Investigate summer 2012. Bill O'Connell
11/14/2012 Meeting or Teleconference Held O'Connell met with NSB to discuss site status and potential future activities at the site. No excavations to date, will coordinate excavation with soils removal. Keather McLoone
