7/30/2008 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum Approximately 5,000-gallons of Bunker C heating oil were removed from the tank prior to the excavation. A flame ionization detector was used to guide the removal of contaminated soil resulting in the excavation and thermal treatment of approximately 18 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Confirmation samples collected from the bottom and sides of the excavation did not contain contaminants above 18 AAC 75 Method Two, migration to groundwater cleanup levels. After sampling, clean soils removed during the excavation were used as backfill in the excavation. Groundwater was not encountered. Bill O'Connell
7/30/2008 Site Closure Approved The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed review of the report titled UST Post Closure Site Assessment, Whittier Ferry Terminal; Whittier Alaska dated November, 2007. This site had been contaminated by the release of a hazardous substance; however, based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined that no further remedial action is required, and that ADOT&PF Whittier Ferry Terminal UST can be closed. The hazardous substance contamination has been adequately addressed and does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. Bill O'Connell
