Problems/Comments

During the removal of one 2,000 gallon premium gas, one 3,000 gallon unleaded gas, one 4,000 gallon unleaded gas, and one 10,000 gallon leaded gasoline underground storage tanks on May 13 through 17, 1993, maximum soil contamination of EPH 684 ppm, VPH 2,800 ppm, BTEX 720 ppm, and Benzene 3.8 ppm was encountered. Groundwater contamination of Benzene 0.134 mg/L was encountered. Approximately 340 cubic yards of soil was excavated and hauled to Clean Soils facility in Nikiski for thermal remediation. Approximately 300 to 400 cubic yards left and treated with a Soil Vapor Extraction System, because continued excavation would undermine the buildings and the Sterling Highway.
