Problems/Comments

The area comprising National Park Service (NPS) Katmai National Park Brooks Camp North includes Brooks Lodge, guest cabins, a visitor’s center, a ranger station, employee housing, and various other facilities. Three former underground storage tanks (USTs) and the associated distribution piping were the main sources of the contamination at this site. While some piping still exists onsite, the USTs and the majority of the distribution piping were removed in 1993. An air-sparging system was installed and operated in the vicinity of the generator building in an attempt to remediate the piping leak, a day tank overflow, and underground storage tank (UST) releases. The use of the air-sparging system has since been discontinued. A network of monitoring wells were installed across the site to evaluate petroleum impacts to groundwater and migration potential to Naknek Lake.

Jonathan Schick
12/8/2010 Update or Other Action Contaminated Sites Staff sent a letter to the National Park Service with comments on the Draft Report detailing well installation and groundwater monitoring of the groundwater impacts from the removed leaking gasoline UST that was in the area of the parking lot. THe results show that the DRO, GRO and Benzene concentrations remain at high levels above the cleanup levels and have not attenuated since the monitoring began. The wells downgradient do not show any signs of impacts migrating at this site, but additional monitoring is recommended. The comments on the report were largely editorial in nature. Jonathan Schick

This work plan outlines the continued groundwater sampling at MW-3R, MW-13, WP-23, and WP-24 for DRO, fuel-related VOCs, and PAHs. Exceedances of cleanup levels in 2017 were reported in WP-24 (DRO) and MW-12 (naphthalene). Soil ingestion and direct contact pathways will need to be quantitatively evaluated for the west generator building source area prior to a cleanup complete determination for this site. Gretchen Caudill

Comments concerned clarification of site characterization and possible surface water contaminants. Tim Sharp
11/4/2019 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC approved 2019 Groundwater sampling survey report. Report was in the form of a brief letter for this effort as a DD is being developed this year for this site. DD to be released in late fall/early winter. Tim Sharp

12/1/2020 Update or Other Action NPS discussed the difficulties of attaining a NAUL for the site, and so was interested on moving forward to attempt to close the site without ICs in the future. Potential areas of soil contamination above HH levels exist near the incinerator building and along the former pipeline at the site. DEC recommended further soil sampling to characterize the releases and determine if any HH exceedances remain. Further remedial action will likely be required depending on the site investigation. Tim Sharp
3/25/2021 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC commented on the Draft 2021 Groundwater Sampling Work Plan. NPS will sample groundwater from four monitoring wells to assess current VOCs, PAHs and DRO concentrations at the site. It is DEC's understanding that the NPS has not determined how to move forward with the Decision Document at this time. Tim Sharp
4/30/2021 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other On this date, DEC Approved the Final 2021 Groundwater Monitoring Work Plan. Tim Sharp
12/1/2021 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC reviewed the 2021 Draft Groundwater Monitoring Report, which details continued groundwater monitoring at the Brooks Camp North site for DRO, PAHs, and VOCs. Four monitoring wells were sampled and compared to Table C. One exceedance of naphthalene in a duplicate sample was detected, DEC recommends the wells be sampled again in 2023 for the same COCs to ascertain if all analytes fall below cleanup levels. Tim Sharp
12/13/2021 Site Characterization Report Approved ADEC approved the Final Groundwater Monitoring Report. NPS plans on returning in 2023, and recommends decommissioning wells provided results show contaminant levels falling below Table C. Tim Sharp
8/17/2022 Meeting or Teleconference Held ADEC met with NPS and representatives from Ahtna to discuss multiple site histories and potential paths forward for remediation and eventual closure with or without ICs. Tim Sharp
2/24/2023 Meeting or Teleconference Held ADEC met with NPS and representatives from Ahtna to discuss multiple site histories and potential paths forward for remediation and eventual closure with or without ICs. Arika Garcia
