Problems/Comments
The Greatland Auto Service site is located at 4950 Taku Drive, approximately 200 feet south of the Glenn Highway at the intersection of Stewart Street and Taku Drive, Anchorage, Alaska. The property is bordered by a residential neighborhood to the east, west, and south. The site currently operates as an automobile repair and service station. The site was actively operated as a fueling station until the mid-1960’s. Five underground storage tanks were present on the property consisting of a 5,000-gallon, a 2,000-gallon and a 1,000-gallon gasoline tanks, a 2,000-gallon diesel tank, and a 2,000-gallon used oil tank. The used oil tank continued to store product until its removal in June of 1995. In June/July 1995, the underground storage tank systems, including the tanks, associated piping, remaining dispersers, and dispenser island, were excavated and removed. Approximately thirty 55-gallon drums of used oil were pumped from the used oil tank and stored for a period of time on the property. Additionally, 5 cubic yards of visibly contaminated soil was removed from the used oil tank excavation and stored on the property. A release investigation was performed in 1996. Corrective action (cleanup) activities were initiated in August 2001. A total of 246 tons of petroleum contaminated soil from the former east gasoline tank pump island location was excavated, transported off-site and thermally remediated along with the 5 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the 1995 removal activities. Based on the excavation sampling results, all remaining contaminated soil above site cleanup levels was successfully removed. A groundwater monitoring well was installed and sampled in 2002 to determine if groundwater contamination had occurred at this property. The groundwater testing found no detectible contamination. The drums of used oil were sampled and in 2002 they were transported to an out of state disposal facility in Tacoma Washington. On September 26, 2002, the ADEC issued a No Further Action (NFA) letter for the site.
