Problems/Comments

Two USTs and a concrete dispenser island were removed in 1997 - one was reported to have stored diesel and the other gasoline. One excavation bottom sample per tank was collected as confirmation and analyzed for GRO, DRO, BTEX, and lead. Concentrations up to 8,900 mg/kg DRO and 0.44 mg/kg benzene. Report figure shows facility well on other side of building from excavation in what is likely a downgradient direction based on topography of the area but does not give distance. F.K.A. L65.23

6/30/2008 Update or Other Action Stopped to conduct site visit and photos were taken. Staff unavailable to escort at facility due to major construction project on highway outside facility. Visit confirms that onsite well and contaminated soil within a reasonable distance that groundwater contamination should continue to be a concern at the site until analyses can show whether or not it is. Keather McLoone
7/29/2008 Update or Other Action Email communication with ADOT&PF which indicates that water use is not intended for drinking water and bottle water is supplied. Letter sent requesting that water taps have signage posted indicating that water is not potable and that water be sampled for benzene and DRO so that impact to groundwater can be evaluated Keather McLoone
8/6/2008 Update or Other Action ADOT email acknowledges receipt of letter and states that signage will be posted but that ADOT can not fund for sampling. Keather McLoone
9/10/2008 Update or Other Action Sample collected by ADOT&PF staff from onsite well submitted to SGS for DRO and BTEX analysis. Keather McLoone
10/2/2008 Update or Other Action Date of letter to ADOT&PF regarding results of analysis of water from onsite well collected by ADOT staff on 9/10/08 (0.282 ug/L benzene and 0.211 mg/L DRO both estimated because below PQL and associated with low-level method blank detections). Results and lab data review checklist were included in the mailing. Keather McLoone
6/8/2010 Site Visit Site visit to Chulitna station to meet with Kevin Mielke and Andy Weiland. New well installed to the northwest of the buildings and upgradient from former and current sources. Well reportedly has ~ 20 ft screen and is set at > 500 ft bgs. This water is also treated by reverse osmosis due to methane and other contaminants. Former drinking water well reportedly located to the northeast of the onsite buildings and decommissioned. According to ADOT staff, the well indicated on the UST Tank report is incorrect and possibly a sewer cleanout. Keather McLoone
7/22/2010 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), Contaminated Sites Program, has completed a review of the environmental records associated with the ADOTPF-Cascade Facility site. Based on the information provided to date, the ADEC has determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, and no further remedial action will be required as long as the site is in compliance with established institutional controls. This decision is based on the administrative record for ADOTPF-Cascade Facility, which is located in the offices of the ADEC in Anchorage, Alaska. Keather McLoone
